👏 Congratulations to the city of Antwerp for scoring a Special Mention from the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize! The Belgian port city was recognised for its systematic rejuvenation plans and projects, which also saw the city embark on the most ambitious citizen participation experiment in Belgium to date. Powered by ground-up ideas, the city was able to come up with large and small-scale interventions to tackle urban challenges such as climate change, as well as improving housing and living environments in areas around the city. 💡 👇 Click through below for a preview of these strategies, and read more at https://lnkd.in/dKWpQE4t *Photo credit: stad Antwerpen --- The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize honours outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of liveable, vibrant, and sustainable urban communities around the world. Excellent! Congratulations! I visited Antwerp for the first time in the mid-1990s when regeneration efforts had barely started. I went to the Museum of Modern Art south of the old town in a fairly lifeless rundown neighborhood. Meanwhile, the areas around the docks and port basins to the north of the old town used to be incredibly shabby, but have changed beyond recognition now. I would rank Antwerp as one of the most dynamic and most engaging - although not most beautiful - cities in that part of Europe.
